Welcome, wizards, to the tastiest barbershop blog in Brum! The Finery is proud to introduce
its very own corner of written content. And what better way to kick things off than a chat with
the head honcho, Sam.
Origin stories
LM: The Finery has such a distinct vibe. Where did it all come from?
SB: “The shop was established in the winter of 2019. I wanted to create a barber shop that
wasn’t too ‘laddy’. Believe it or not, I got the inspiration for the look from a toilet in an LA
restaurant.”
LM: It definitely has its own feel—an inclusive space with a distinct look. Beyond US
toilets, what else inspires the shop’s look?
SB: “The aesthetic is bold, experimental but relaxed. It’s a bit like our music taste:
everything goes, from punk and new wave to grime, UK bass, funk, synth-heavy tracks, and
some hip-hop thrown in for good measure. Anything that gets you moving.
The challenges of going indie in Brum
LM: You started as a barber before opening your own shop. What’s the climate like for
independent business owners in Birmingham right now?
SB: “Honestly, it’s tough. I would love to have a shop in the city centre but unfortunately, the
prices only really accommodate commercial setups. Also, the car-centric roads and lack of
public transport makes it tricky for a more central site. Still love the place though and still
going strong!”
What’s Next for The Finery?
SB: “We’re excited to expand our services with bleaching, colour work and therapeutic facials, we’re also planning a third site in Kings Heath, so keep your eyes peeled for that!”
And there you have it folks, a little taster to whet the appetite, we’ll be back soon for chats with the team across the Brum and Warwick sites and much more!
Stay Fine!
